CoACH: a training network in the field of glass, ceramics and composites

The European funding programme Horizon 2020 funds ETNs ("European Training Network" consortia) that wish to set up interdisciplinary research-based training.

Purpose of the project

The "CoACH" project network is based on proven cooperation between industrial partners (10 start-ups or SMEs) and the academic world (5 laboratories) with complementary skills. Its scientific objectives are to advance knowledge of glass and ceramic materials and to develop innovative, high-tech functional materials for energy, health and the environment. The ISCR's Glass and Ceramics team is a partner in this project: it is developing semi-conducting glassy materials based on heavy elements for infrared optics and thermoelectricity.

As part of this project, Bhuvanesh Srinivasan was recruited as a PhD student by the Université de Rennes 1. His thesis started in November 2015 and is entitled "Development of tellurium-based glasses and glass-ceramics for thermoelectricity". The objective is to create essentially glassy materials with high electronic conductivities. In this context, tellurium glasses, initially developed for infrared optics, have great potential.

International dimension

The project plans to recruit 15 PhD students from laboratories in 7 different European countries (Italy, France, UK, Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium and Finland). These young researchers will travel to the different sites to benefit from the skills of each of the partners, in order to advance their research project.

The company DIAFIR, based at the Rennes-Atalante site, is also a partner in the programme.
